Generative AI and Data Science Recruitment: Another Evolution

Hello. I'm Euan, continually plugged into the pulse of the data recruitment sphere. Today, I've taken a journey on the current hype train—Generative AI—and the implications it could have on data science recruitment.

The Generative AI Phenomenon

Generative AI is the new evolution of the Data Science world, capable of not just analyzing data but also creating new instances of it. The MIT Technology Review listed it as one of the top 10 breakthrough technologies of 2021, and two years later, we are now starting to see the real world examples flooding in.

The Supply and Demand Conundrum

So, where does this leave us in the realm of data recruitment? Gartner has reported a 46% year-over-year increase in demand for AI skills. Does Generative AI inflate the demand for data scientists, or does it threaten to make certain roles obsolete?

Potential Impacts on Data Science Recruitment

1. Shifting Skill Sets

The capabilities of Generative AI may mean that data scientists will increasingly shift from coding and data cleaning to more strategic roles—designing algorithms that can work in tandem with Generative AI systems.

2. Paving the Way for New Job Roles

Generative AI could be the birth mother of entirely new professions within the data science community. While the core coding roles will always be essential, the advent of Generative AI can lead to new specialized roles such as 'AI Ethics Officer,' 'Generative Model Trainer,' or 'AI Data Strategist.' These roles would focus on ensuring that Generative AI technologies are ethical, efficient, and effective.

3. The Job Market Equilibrium: Creation vs. Automation

The infusion of Gen AI into the data science world is a double-edged sword when it comes to job availability. On one side, as mentioned above, we have the creation of new specialized roles. On the flip side, certain repetitive tasks within data science may become automated, possibly reducing the number of entry-level positions. The ultimate impact on job availability might hinge on how quickly companies adapt to these technologies and upskill their current employees. According to a LinkedIn 2022 report, 37% of data professionals are already preparing to learn AI skills to keep up with industry demands.

In my humble opinion, I believe it is much more likely that the start of Gen AI will create a swathe of new roles as companies strive to build and empower Gen AI products. When these products are up and running on their own, then we could potentially then see some core roles becoming redundant or evolved.

The Ethics Angle

We can't ignore the ethical side of this technology. As processes become more automated, the human touch might take a backseat. It's a question we need to grapple with—how much automation is too much?

In Conclusion

Generative AI is a groundbreaking technology with the potential to revolutionize or complicate both data science products and recruitment. Either way, the landscape is shifting, and we need to stay on our toes. Stagnation has no place in the world of data science recruitment, and it's our job to keep up, adapt, and thrive.
